The use of protective clothing can protect a motorcycle rider in the case of a crash. Most riders wear helmets and clothing to protect their upper body but are less likely to wear motorcycle pants. There is nothing worse than having a tire blowout and not being able to change the tire because a bolt gets striped while you trying to change it. You manage to get the bolt off but you are unable to replace it nor is the local service station.

Motorcycle Insurance, What You May Not Know

You came up with the bright idea of trading in your car for a motorcycle. It’s a smart move right? Save on gas, repairs, upkeep, and emissions, right? While you will save on all those aspects of owning a motor vehicle, you may however not save on insurance. Motorcycle insurance is very expensive unfortunately.

Motorcycle insurance covers the owner/driver against the typical events that will occur with a bike, accidents and theft. Both are held in different regards. Insurance considers motorcycle’s “solo event,” because the driver is usually by there self and only poses danger to there self.

Fire and theft are where rates really blow out of proportion. Insurance companies are unwilling to cover bikes against theft, because they can be stolen quite easy. Because of this, you can expect high premiums.

Insurance companies cannot kill their integrity by jumping to conclusions when it comes to calculating costs and risks of motorcycles. Accidents and theft do happen, but the majority of bike riders are safe and smart on the road. The insurance company will also drop the rate if the driver is older, very experienced on a bike, and rides a bike that is not overly powerful.

While the driver’s age and riding experience is import, the insurance company cares more about past speeding and driving offenses as well as number of accidents the driver was involved in. If the number is low, the premium will be cheaper. Car and motorcycle insurance really pays off for drivers who are careful on the road.

Last but not least, a bike owner will receive a lower premium if they use the motorcycle more for a recreational activity and less for everyday use. For example, if your primary mode of transportation is a truck and you just own a bike for pleasure, chances are your premium will drop.

Goldwing Riders - Watch Out for Rocks

The Honda Riders Club was planning a ride to West Virginia. I had my new Goldwing fresh from the dealers showroom. What could go wrong? I had heard that rocks could be thrown by the front tire and damage the oil filter, but it was my first long ride and he belly pan I ordered aftermarket had not arrived. I was warned by a friend.

I heard about someone who had struck a rock and lost all of their oil. I had also seen on the webboards that this could occur so I had orderd a belly pan as an aftermarket item. The time for the ride was here but the belly pan had not arrived.

We rode into West Virginia from Manassas, Virginia and just short of our hotel in Marlinton Virginia, We rounded a curve. On the road were rocks that had come down the side of the hill and landed on the road. My front tire struck a rock.

You never think it will happen to you but a rock flips and hits the bike. The rock broke into many pieces and I knew I had hit something solid. Smoke billowed out the back of the bike and I knew I had to stop immediately.

After the curve there was a business parking lot which I rode into and I hit the kill switch coasting to a stop. The result of the rock damage is shown below. The irony is I had read of this problem on the webboards and had ordered a belly pan the previous Monday night, but I had not arrived by Friday morning when we departed Manassas.

The damage to my fairing - three deep cuts was minor compared to the hole in my oil filter. The grey plastic could be replaced.

I was fortunate, someone driving by saw our plight and just happened to have a screwdriver, which I stuck in the hole and used to remove the filter. The oil was almost all gone, with very little left in the engine. One of my fellow riders lent me his bike to ride back into the nearest town. I found an auto parts store that had a filter that fit and took that and some oil back up the hill.

In the parking lot, I did a roadside repair and installed the oil filter and oil. The Goldwing started up just fine. I appreciate the fellow riders who trusted me with their motorcycle after mine was struck and also was lucky that the person who stopped had a screwdriver that helped me remove the damaged oil filter. We rode the last two miles to our hotel with no problems.

Vintage Schwinn - The Bicycle that Will Remain in Our Hearts Forever

The Vintage Schwinn bicycle is a the most popular bicycle.  If you don’t believe me, simply do a search on the Internet and watch the many results return.  Let’s dig into the archives a bit to find out what makes the Schwinn so special to so many of us.

Schwinn, was founded in 1895 by Ignaz Schwinn and became the dominant manufacturer of American bicycles throughout the rest of the 20th century. The bicycle craze that originated in Chicago, Illinois saw 30 factories producing over 1,000 units per day! But the with the advent of the automobile, popularity of the bicycle waned - output dropped 25%. What followed were many turbulent years brought on by Schwinn’s insistence that their distributors sell and service only Schwinn bicycles. This led to many battles that ultimately resulted in Schwinn loosing a Supreme Court decision in 1967. This did not affect the demand of the “vintage Schwinn” and its legacy lives on today. Even though the name Schwinn still remains strong today, the term “vintage Schwinn” may be even more popular!

The 1960’s and 1970’s saw the 10-Speed and the popularity of the Varsity and Continental grow. These two models still remain one of the most sought-after vintage Schwinn bikes today. The mid 1970’s also saw the the Paramount, a heavy-weight bicycle popular with the wealthier riders looking for a high-end bicycle.

The mid 1970’s saw the oil crisis force many people to use the bicycle as a major means of transportation and recreation. That period also saw Schwinn merge efforts with Panasonic. The big models to come out of the Schwinn/Panasonic partnership are also two of the more popular vintage Schwinn’s today, the World Traveller and World Voyager.

Probably one of the biggest Schwinn bicycle to to maintain a high “vintage” status is the Banana bike… and they made a ton of them in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Does Stingray ring a bell? How about Apple Krate? The Krate model actually saw 6 color models derived from the period between 1968 and 1973, Apple Krate, Orange Krate, Cotton Picker, Lemon Peeler, Grey Ghost, and the Pea Picker.

The Schwinn bicycle will remain one of the biggest names in vintage bicycles. And they will continue to hold a special place in our hearts forever more.
